Dragon Boat Racing

Dragon boat racing began more than 2000 years ago on the banks of the life-sustaining rivers in the valleys of southern China, as a fertility rite to ensure plentiful crops.  Today, the sport is popular world wide and is on particular rise in popularity in Canada.

The Carleton Place Canoe Club offers a Dragon Boat program to adults, with the intent of providing a fun, yet competitive atmosphere.

What is a Dragon Boat?

Originally from China, the 40 foot long boats are now built in North America. The boats are just wide enough to sit two people per row. Each is decorated with a dragon head and tail and the hull adorned with materials that give the effect of scaly bodies.

How can I get involved?

There are two ways to get involved at the CPCC. Either as a full-time member (see programs for more details), or you may rent our boat for individual sessions.

Teams of approximately 22 persons may book practice sessions anytime. The season begins the first week of May and continues through September. Teams can be competitive, recreational, mixed, male, or female. To become a dragon boat paddler, you need not be a top-notch athlete, you only need the drive and commitment to get out and enjoy yourself. The goal of the program is to promote fun, fitness, and friendship. Companies can book team building sessions.
